Bullying and Being Bullied

REDUCE BULLYING and BEING BULLIED with the SELF ACCEPTANCE SKILLS METHOD – a systematic, proactive, positive initiative for schools, parents, carers and youth organisations.

All students – not just those who bully and those who get bullied – can discover their inner confidence, strength and resilience with the tested Self Acceptance Skills Method of ten definite, practical, logical thinking steps.

This unusual cognitive method does not focus on the bullying behaviour but on its causes: ten common thinking errors that lead to misinterpretations which in turn affect judgment, feelings and behaviour. The ten correct-thinking Self Acceptance Skills totally replace the ten thinking errors.

One error is to think in terms of ‘worth’ and ‘self esteem’ which are now recognised as unreliable, hazardous notions. When they are replaced with Skill #1 – reliable and secure ‘Self Acceptance’, relief and calm confidence emerge.

The Self Acceptance Skills Method complements other approaches that deal with bullying.

REDUCE BULLYING

This method acts on two of the incentives to bully:

1. An incentive to bully disappears

For many of those who bully, the incentive is to protect themselves from the crushing pain of low self esteem. The finding that students who bully generally have high self esteem fits with their continuing to put down others’ worth in order to maintain that high self esteem.

It is ‘to make themselves feel good’, youngsters perceive.

When the notions of ‘worth’ and ‘self esteem’ disappear, this incentive to bully disappears.

2. A constructive alternative to violence

For some people who bully, this is the behaviour they have learned and they know no other. The practical Self Acceptance thinking skills provide alternatives: “I have previously only known how to react with violence. The simple skills in your book have proved to be a ‘cure-all’ for me.

REDUCE ‘BEING BULLIED’

Students worry about being bullied, especially those moving from primary to high school and those feeling and looking vulnerable and ‘different’.

No one has to suffer from these worries.

All students can learn the ten simple, powerful thinking steps that free up their own abilities to deal with problems or to avert them.

Examples

A teacher reports:
A child kept reacting violently to constant teasing in the playground. I explained, “remember the lessons – if you accept yourself and don’t call yourself names, the teasing can’t hurt you. Soon after, the child came up and told me happily, the kids called me a name again but I’m not worried about it. I know they’re just doing it to make themselves feel good.

Parents report:
We told our six year old about self labels and self acceptance. We knew he understood self labels because he pointed out ours! After school one day he said, “James doesn’t accept himself. When we asked how he knew that, he replied, He said nasty things to people today. He doesn’t accept himself.

The ten logical correct-thinking skills are clear-cut, definite and easily understood. They are fundamental life lessons that promote emotional, mental and social well-being.

Other cognitive methods show how to deal with concerns after they have arisen. This method shows how to stop concerns from arising in the first place.

The Self Acceptance Skills Method clarifies how to think and is the logical, firm foundation for what we think about. Sabine names it ‘thinkeracy’ since it is as essential as literacy and numeracy.

An easy method to teach universally, it has been recommended as a core subject in primary school.

It is purposeful teaching for primary prevention. It is also popular for early intervention.

All students can benefit from the Self Acceptance Skills Method. School staff can enjoy reduced stress.
